This is Not Cancel Culture
July 17, 2024

A number of people in the past two days had their public calls to murder Republicans more efficiently made a lot more public. Some of them lost their jobs. I have seen calls today to take the high road. Conservatives are better than this! It proves we have no real principles!

Cancel culture is making a group effort to get someone fired because they either expressed an opinion contrary to your world view or transgressed in some way that is not an official crime. It’s actually not easy to get a woman fired because she donated to Trump or a man dropped from all of his projects because he slept with a lot of groupies in their twenties. There’s a great deal of pile-on effort involved because there’s nothing legally wrong involved and companies are hesitant to act on that without a ton of bad press.

As this post said so succinctly:

Cancel culture is NOT (NOT) getting someone fired because they threatened (tacitly or directly) the life of the President. If our current administration took threats against President Trump seriously and dealt with them through legal channels there would be no need for the citizens to regulate the situation. Threatening, encouraging, openly wishing, yada yada, assignation to ANYONE is a crime, and if it happens to be a politician you are visited by the FBI. Unless, of course, it is Donald Trump. Then they ignore it. Those committing the federal crime of encouraging the assassination of President Donald Trump being exposed and fired from employment is NOT cancel culture. It is societal self-correction.

Cancel culture pushed a comics professional into suicide this year. He committed no crime. His murderer was rewarded with an Eisner nomination. They will not reflect. Your principles will not make them repent. If we can't punch the bully for advocating murder, we have no high ground, and they will murder again.

This is what the woman who falsely accused Ed Piskor of running a racist alt-account did after the attempted Trump assassination:

She read “I missed” stories and laughed about them.

You can catch up on our stream from Saturday night that we ran a few hours after the failed attempt. You can hear my prediction that Kim Cheatle wouldn’t resign and that’s exactly how it turned out. Chance’s assurances that there’s no way a leader could hold that office after this disaster are a remnant from the distant past. Personal accountability is not a thing.

A good father died. Trump lost part of an ear. People who make similar threats or wish more of their “enemies” had died deserve no quarter. It’s illegal and bloodthirsty. Put them on blast and let the chips fall where they may.

There were some excellent threads passed around of people who were canceled in the past for doing things that were in no way criminal:

Conservatives who lost everything for basic political speech

Grummz list of cancelled gamers

I was sent this additional helpful list

RIP Ed Piskor.

H-1B Visa

Where does the American graduate go where the H-1B Visa won't take it away from him? Importing indentured servants from other countries has flattened the salaries of American engineers since 2012. No one is happier about it than the average tech company.

Naturally when I bring up the average tech company who should pop up but Bobby Cujo—but that’s for next time.

And then there’s Friday’s comic in case you missed it:

The California fires continue to rage.

War is Over

Every year the radio plays that John Lennon song that ends in a parenthesis. War is over (if you want it). Unfortunately both parties have to want it, and it seems both parties are intent on war. Odd that I haven't heard this song play on the radio this year.

I got this nice note from SESpider on X:

That sums up why we started Based Comic in the first place. If this reminder that Jesus won the war is helpful at all, may it bless you and yours this Christmas. We’ll see you next week!
