In Homo Deus, Yuval Noah Harari assures us that AI will know us better than we know ourselves. Given last week's Google debacle where they pretended white people didn't exist, do you want to take AI advice?
I’m approaching the end of that book, to my great relief. Harari has increased his exposure this week, showing up on the late shows like Colbert where he managed to make himself look like the reasonable one. Colbert can’t wait to let the machines make all of our decisions for us and Harari called that a dangerous plan.
Don’t misunderstand—Harari has a motive for tooting that horn and it isn’t his loving heart. In face, he tweeted it:
AI is developing so quickly that any laws we create now will no longer apply in a few years. Instead, we need to create living #institutions that can respond to the challenges of #AI in real time.
Keep developing AI, in other words—but only if he’s allowed to control it.
